  Writing My Name in Prekinder

Los estudiantes de Prejardín repasaron la escritura de sus nombres, junto a la profesora Alejandra Ramírez, en la clase de Español. En esta oportunidad iniciaron el proceso escuchando la historia de un hombre cuyo nombre era muy extenso y que conoce a una mujer, con cuatro nombres, que había perdido la memoria. Más tarde los estudiantes utilizaron punzones para realizar una actividad de picado y escritura en el cuaderno. Finalmente escribieron sus nombres con fichas en forma de letras. Este aprendizaje fue vivenciado con mucha emoción por parte de nuestros pequeños alumnos.

Summary: In their Spanish class, with Mrs. Alejandra Ramírez, Prekinder students reviewed the way to write their names through different activities. They read a story, wrote their names on their notebooks and worked with pieces of letters in order to make their names as in a jigsaw puzzle.

  We are Bears at The Dining Table

The students at Rochester learn through our virtues development sessions about appropriate behaviors in different settings. This week, students made several agreements by using the constitution animals. The bear is the example of behavior at the table at the auditeria: they must avoid food waste, sit down properly and leave the space they used clean.

Resumen: en el comedor, los estudiantes acordaron ser como el oso, uno de los animales de la constitución, que nos enseña el buen comportamiento en la mesa. Cuando fueron a la Auditería evitaron desperdiciar comida, se sentaron apropiadamente y dejaron limpio el espacio donde comieron.

  Insects on the Alphabet Mat in Kindergarten

Con la profesora Diana Chivatá, los estudiantes de Jardín aprendieron sobre algunos insectos en su clase de español. Primero ubicaron las palabras sobre el alfabeto del tapete, compartieron información al respecto y trabajaron escribiendo las palabras en el libro y luego hacieron frases cortas sobre las características de su insecto favorito. Los estudiantes utilizaron palabras que han aprendido a lo largo del año escolar y algunos conectores para poder construir sus oraciones.

Summary: With the teacher Ms. Diana Chivatá, students learned about some insects in their Spanish class. They placed some words in their corresponding place on the alphabet mat and they shared some information about their favorite insect. They also wrote short sentences about the insect´s characteristics.

 

  Celebrating Chinese New Year

Kindergarten students celebrated the Chinese New Year through some fun activities. As they are working in their integrated project «Around the World», they learned some interesting facts about the Chinese culture.  Learning About Greece in 1st Grade

En este trimestre, los estudiantes de Transición están aprendiendo sobre Grecia; lugar de origen de los Juegos Olímpicos. En una jornada maravillosa,  cada uno lució un traje para representar alguno de los deportes que participan allí. También identificaron el continente donde se ubica Grecia, su capital, bandera, monumentos históricos y a partir de este tema, escribieron textos espontáneos, narraron historias y compartieron de manera oral su aprendizaje.

Summary: During this trimester, 1st Grade students are studying Greece, where the Olympics games began. They dressed up in outfits to represent some of the Olympic sports. Additionally, they learned about Greece’s location, its capital, its flag and its monuments. With this information they wrote short stories and shared them in oral presentations.

  «Inside Our House» in 2nd Grade

In English composition class, students are working in the Unit 4: Inside Our house which is about furniture and house hold objects. After sharing information about how people live in different houses around the world, students  brainstormed ideas about the materials houses are made of. Thay planned and designed a room of a house using playdoh and a shoe box. This project invited them to work cooperatively by sharing ideas and building the rooms of a house in order to build one house per grade level. An enriching experience to use both Integrated Visual Learning  and Cooperative Learning in class.

Resumen: en clase de composición en inglés, los estudiantes de 1º están aprendiendo sobre las partes de la casa, los diferentes tipos de vivienda y los materiales de construcción que existen. Ellos elaboraron una maqueta del interior de una casa usando plastilina y una caja de zapatos. 

 Demonstrating Learned Vocabulary in 3rd Grade

Third graders had the opportunity to write a descriptive text in English explaining why they love vacations. Students demonstrated the use of the vocabulary of the week. 

Resumen: los estudiantes de 2º tuvieron la oportunidad de escribir un texto descriptivo en Inglés explicando su gusto por las vacaciones. Ellos demostraron el uso del vocabulario de la semana.

 Typing techniques in 5th Grade

During this Computer Science class trimester, 5th Grade students  have been practicing the techniques to type appropriately using the computer’s «Qwerty» keyboard. For this, they have been practicing for more than a month doing exercises online, specifically of the Home Row. The technique and the proper movement of the fingers in its columns has been the pillar of this learning, which was evaluated last week with a practical exam, where 98% of the students obtained a score above 90%.

Resumen: los estudiantes de 4º están practicando las técnicas adecuadas para  escribir de forma apropiada usando el teclado tipo “Qwerty” del computador. La técnica y el movimiento de los dedos, han sido el pilar de este aprendizaje, el cual fue evaluado la semana pasada con un examen práctico, donde el 98% de los estudiantes obtuvo un puntaje superior a 90%.

 Representing Our Quality World By Using Technology in 4th Grade

In Computer Science class, 4th Grade students are using the Pages software on both, the computer and iPads, in order to graphically represent their Quality World. To do this, they have been designing posters of some topics that represent their quality world as they use high resolution images and at least one paragraph in English.

Resumen: en clase de Ciencias de la Computación, los estudiantes de 3º están usando el programa de Pages, tanto en el computador como en los iPads, con el fin de representar de forma gráfica su mundo de calidad. Para ello, han estado diseñando posters de algún tema que, para ellos haga parte de su propio mundo de calidad.

 Learning About Colombia´s Cartography in 4th Grade

Durante este trimestre los estudiantes de 3º han dedicado tiempo al proyecto“Mi país y yo” para adquirir nuevos conocimientos relativos a la cartografía colombiana.

Utilizando fotografías de viajes familiares, los alumnos crearon mapas personalizados expresando así amor por su país. 

Los hermosos mapas que produjeron, y la forma que en que incorporaron a sus familias, permitieron vincular los conocimientos de Geografía con la vida real. Un proyecto que quedará en sus memorias como aprendizaje útil para la vida.

Summary: During this trimester, 4th Grade students have been working on knowing the cartography of our country. Using photographs of family trips, they created personalized maps as part of the “My country and I”, project where they expressed their love for Colombia and their knowledge about creating maps.

 Getting Ready for the TOEFL Exam in 7th Grade

TOEFL is one of the principal tools of measurement that evaluates the ability of a person to use and understand English as an academic language. Our students from 7th grade have been practicing to get ready for their TOEFL exam next month. It will be the first time for them to take this exam, since it is a requirement in 8th grade. For the past two weeks, we have been using lots of tools and strategies in order for them to feel successful in their test.

Resumen: el examen «TOEFL» es una de las principales herramientas de medición que evalúa la capacidad de una persona para usar y comprender el inglés como idioma académico. Los estudiantes de 6º han estado practicando para presentar el examen el próximo mes. Será la primera vez que realicen este examen, ya que es un requisito en 8º. 

 Ceating Infographics in 6th Grade

Los estudiantes de 5º están aprendiendo acerca de infografías y sus características. En primer lugar, desarrollaron talleres basados en la información que estos tipos de textos brindan. Posteriormente trabajaron, grupal o individualmente, en infografías sobre hábitos constructivos teniendo en mente la regla de oro del Colegio. Esta instancia abrió las puertas de otros temas interesantes tales como el desarrollado de la tecnología en este siglo.

Summary: 6th Grade  students are learning about infographics and their characteristics. They have done some individual and team based to produce inphograpics about the constructive habits, keeping in mind the School’s Golden Rule. They wrote about interesting topics regarding the advances of technology in this century.  

 Learning About Underwater Mysteries in 6th Grade

This week, 6th Grade students have opened up the chapter to Unit 4: Underwater Mysteries. Students are tuning into the wonders of underwater exploration, technology use, and discovering information about Katy Croff Bell. Throughout the week, students will be creating their own short story about an underwater city. Students have the opportunity to choose the genre of their short story: romance, comedy, crime/thriller, or action/adventure. We are excited to see their production at the end of the week!

Resumen: los estudiantes de 5º han empezado la unidad 4 de su libro de Inglés para adentrarse en los «Misterios bajo el agua». Durante la semana, los alumnos realizarán textos cortos para demostrar los aprendido. 

 

Family History in 11th Grade

En el curso de Literatura y Discurso en Español, los estudiantes de 10º  desarrollaron un interesante proyecto acerca de sus orígenes y las raíces de sus familias por medio de la creación de un árbol genealógico.

Durante el desarrollo de la actividad los jóvenes disfrutaron mucho conociendo mejor sus órígenes. Además, exploraron profesiones, ideologías e historia de sus familiares a lo largo de su línea de sangre (término utilizado en la Edad Media).

Summary: In Spanish Literature and Speech class, 11th Grade students are creating a project about their family heritage. For this, they created a genealogic tree where they explored their family history. 

 «Philosophy Has a Woman’s Name» Project in 11th Grade

En la clase de Filosofía y Español de 10º, los profesores Milena Caballero y Juan Francisco Gómez, están preparando un seminario sobre feminismo en el cual los estudiantes están investigando las ideas de distintas corrientes filosóficas para reconocer el trabajo femenino en la historia del pensamiento. Los estudiantes realizaron videos creativos en los que dan cuenta sobre biografías, ideas, obras y la relación que los pensamientos de estas mujeres tienen con el espíritu de su época.

Summary: In 11th Grade Philosophy and Spanish class, teachers Milena Caballero and Juan Francisco Gómez, have been planning a seminar about feminism. Students are currently researching the ideas of different philosophers, in order to recognize female work and role in the history of feminism. 

  DNA experiment in AP Biology Class

In the AP Biology course with Ms. Andrea Polanco, students have been addressing the importance of phylogeny trees in order to explain the process of evolution. In addition, students are analyzing how mitochondrial DNA is shared by all human beings. Rochester School recently purchased a DNA ancestry kit that provides analysis segments of our DNA results and traces its origins to different geographic regions throughout the world.

Resumen: los estudiantes del curso AP de Biología están trabajando en la importancia de los árboles filogenéticos para explicar el proceso de evolución. Adicionalmente, están analizando cómo el ADN mitocondrial es compartido por todos los seres humanos.
