It is with great pleasure that we recognize a significant achievement of our Grade 6 Real World English teacher and Grade 8A Family Coordinator, Guiselle Rincón. Guiselle has been at Rochester School since March 2013 and has been an essential member of the English teaching team. Using effective classroom management techniques and English language teaching strategies, she facilitates and promotes students’ language competency development and success using the English language. She has also assisted the English Curriculum Director as part of her professional development goals. While working full-time at Rochester, Guiselle committed to completing her university degree, where she managed her time and responsibilities as a teacher and a student with excellent results. “Starting in 2017, I decided to embark on an academic journey at Universidad El Bosque that would enable me to achieve my Bilingualism teaching degree here in Colombia. The program is focused on teaching English as a second language, although it fosters Spanish teaching as well. Due to the fact that this university has a bioethical focus, it delves deeply into research and praxis within educational environments. Through this program, I was able to navigate the worlds of English and Spanish literature, grammar, current teaching methodologies and action research.
Throughout my time at this university, I had to overcome some challenges, such as balancing my teaching responsibilities here at school with the academic load that I took on myself, managing time for classes and extracurricular tasks that needed to be taken care of, as well as my financial responsibility for funding my own studies. Throughout the program, I was able to earn a scholarship from the university for the highest Grade Point Average per semester, which is something that was both a blessing and an added stress to keep up. By the end of my program, I was able to focus on a research project that I carried out with my fifth grade students whose scope centered around self-regulation, self-recording strategies, metacognition and strategy-based instruction; all of which are concepts that have a high level of compatibility with Rochester’s teaching focus.
On the 17th of March, I was finally able to close this chapter of my life with the highest of honors! I was selected to give a speech in representation of all of the graduates from the Programs that held their ceremony that day. This honor was only conceded to the student with the highest academic level in all of the faculties combined, which was a great accomplishment for me!

Resumen: Es con gran placer que reconocemos un logro significativo de nuestra profesora de inglés del mundo real de 5º Grado y coordinadora de familias de 7º Grado A, Guiselle Rincón. Guiselle ha estado en la Escuela Rochester desde marzo de 2013 y ha sido un miembro esencial del equipo de enseñanza de inglés. Utilizando técnicas efectivas de gestión del aula y estrategias de enseñanza del idioma inglés, ella facilita y promueve el desarrollo de la competencia lingüística de los estudiantes y el éxito en el uso del idioma inglés. También ha asistido a la Directora del Plan de Estudios de Inglés como parte de sus objetivos de desarrollo profesional. Mientras trabajaba a tiempo completo en Rochester, Guiselle se comprometió a completar su carrera universitaria, donde gestionó su tiempo y responsabilidades como profesora y estudiante con excelentes resultados. “A partir de 2017, decidí emprender un camino académico en la Universidad El Bosque que me permitiera lograr mi título de docente de Bilingüismo aquí en Colombia. El programa está enfocado en la enseñanza del inglés como segunda lengua, aunque fomenta la enseñanza del español también. Debido a que esta universidad tiene un enfoque bioético, profundiza en la investigación y la praxis dentro de los entornos educativos. A través de este programa, pude navegar por el mundo de la literatura inglesa y española, la gramática, las metodologías de enseñanza actuales y la investigación de acción.
A lo largo de mi estancia en esta universidad, tuve que superar algunos retos, como el de equilibrar mis responsabilidades docentes aquí en la escuela con la carga académica que yo misma asumía, la gestión del tiempo para las clases y las tareas extracurriculares de las que había que ocuparse, así como mi responsabilidad financiera para financiar mis propios estudios. A lo largo del programa, pude obtener una beca de la universidad por el promedio de notas más alto por semestre, lo cual fue una bendición y a la vez un estrés adicional para mantener el ritmo. Al final de mi programa, pude centrarme en un proyecto de investigación que llevé a cabo con mis alumnos de quinto grado y cuyo alcance se centraba en la autorregulación, las estrategias de autorregistro, la metacognición y la instrucción basada en estrategias; todos ellos son conceptos que tienen un alto nivel de compatibilidad con el enfoque de enseñanza de Rochester.
El 17 de marzo, por fin pude cerrar este capítulo de mi vida con el mayor de los honores. Fui seleccionada para dar un discurso en representación de todos los graduados de los Programas que celebraron su ceremonia ese día. Este honor sólo se concedía al estudiante con el nivel académico más alto en todas las facultades juntas, ¡lo cual fue un gran logro para mí”
